2012/2013 – U17 Soccer
COMPETITIONS: Munster Junior Cup and Cork Junior Cup
MANAGERS: Mr. Murray & Mr.Croke
CAPTAIN: Gavin Fitzgerald (Avondale)
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Peter McGivern (Douglas Hall)
The Munster campaign ended early this year for our U17 who started the game against Ballincollig Community School without several key players who were unavailable. The game finished 3-1 to Ballincollig with Roco dominating most of the play but just couldnt get a second goal to add to Adam O Regan’s opener.
In the Cork cup, Rochestown hosted Colaiste Choilm and after a 2-2 draw after extra time, gained passage to the next round through a 5-3 win in the penalty shootout. Several players performed very well including Kevin Flahive and the two centre backs of Peter McGivern (Douglas Hall) and captain Gavin Fitzgerald (Avondale). Gary Hartnett (Douglas Hall) scored the winning penalty.
Passage were the opposition in the next round and after a nervous start Rochestown settled and deservedly took the lead through Cian Devine (Corinthians) after good work by Paul Barry (Douglas Hall) on the left. Roco quickly added a second through a Dion Hennessy (Ringmahon) wondergoal from all of 30 yards and added a third just before the final whistle with Dion Hennessy getting his second and Rochestown’s third.
In the Quarter Final, Rochestown faced a resilient Deerpark side who took the lead 20 minutes into the game. Rochestown settled and added two goals in quick succession with a Gavin Fitzgerald penalty and a goal from an almost impossible angle from Daniel Kingston (Avondale) after a fine crossfield ball from Dion Hennessy. Dion went on to grab another and Daniel Kingston also added a second to make the final score 4-1 in favour of Rochestown.
The Semi Final was a very tight affair with Colaiste Spioraid Naomh proving strong opposition. Despite being under pressure for the first 30 minutes, Roco weathered the storm and came much more into the game as it approached half time. A very tight first half changed completely in the second half as Rochestown upped the intensity and now dominated the game with Mark Dolan (Corinthians) and George Gill (Springfield Ramblers) dominant in midfield and our back four looking very solid. With 5 minutes remaining, a great ball over the top from Mark Dolan was finished by Cork Youths player Ben McAuliffe (Corinthians) to put Roco through to the final.
The final against Ballincollig was another tight game with very few chances coming either way in the first half. Mark Dolan was pulling the strings in the centre of the pitch and his clever play almost brought a reward on a few occasions. Roco keeper Gary Hartnett pulled off a fine save after 30 mins to keep the score at 0-0 at half time. Roco burst into life in the second half and a clever flick by the impressive Dion Hennessy was volleyed to the net from 20 yards by Ben McAuliffe. From here on in, there was only going to be one winner with George Gill now dominating in midfield and the back four looking extremely solid. With ten minutes to go Roco sealed the win after substitute Kevin Flahive crossed for Dion Hennessy to head in from 10 yards. It was just what Roco deserved and shows that the future is bright for next year’s Senior team. Well done to captain Gavin Fitzgerald and his team.
