FUTSAL

Roco took part in the FAI Schools Futsal competition for the first time this year and have taken extremely well to it. We took two teams to the Cork Finals and actually ended up meeting each other in the semi-final. For the 17 players involved, we played 17 games and won 15 of them, with one of those defeats being to ourselves. In the final, we played Mayfield where we won 5-0 to claim the FAI Cork Schools Futsal Cup at the first attempt. Jay Clarke finished as top scorer with 12 goals in his 9 games with Sean Cummins getting our Player of the Tournament.

The following week saw us represent Cork in the Munsters and it again turned out to be a fantastic day for the Roco boys. Three consecutive 2-0 wins against Kerry, Clare and Waterford, followed by a 3-1 win against Limerick meant that Roco claimed the FAI Munster Schools Futsal Cup with a game to spare. We finished off in style with a 4-1 win over Tipperary to cap off a great day. Adrien Thibaut was the star of the day with his goals, movement and skills a joy to behold.

The Futsal All-Ireland Final was very successful with Roco finishing 2nd in the country after beating Ulster and Leinster twice but losing twice to eventual winners Connacht. A terrific achievement fro a team with a never say die attitude.

Munster First Year Cup

11-01-17 – Group A – Ballincollig CS 1 Rochestown 8

Rochestown kicked off their campaign with an impressive win over Ballincollig CS. From the off, Roco meant business and within 4 minutes Cian O’Flaherty hit the back of the net after a great through ball by Matthew Murphy.

Roco continued to dominate with Matthew Murphy and Sean Cummins dominant in midfield and Jay Clarke causing problems everytime he got on the ball. Goalscorer Flaherty turned provider in the 18th minute where his run down the right set up a cross which Adrien Thibaut finished neatly in the centre.  Flaherty would indeed go on to cap a fine half with two more strikes before half time to complete his hat-trick. The first was a cool sidefoot finish past the keeper and the second came after great play by Jay Clarke to put O’Flaherty through on goal again to make the score 4-0 at half-time.

Roco started the second half slowly but eventually got into their rhythm again and scored an incredible 4 goals in the 8 minutes to compound their dominance. Three very neat goals by substitutes  Colm O’Sullivan (2) and Paul Harding were followed up a good finish from Jack Cunningham. Ballincollig would go onto score a consolation with the last kick of the game. A great performance all round but the man of the match goes to hat-trick hero Cian O’Flaherty.

Roco completed their second group game in style with a comfortable 4-0 win. Roco spent the majority of the first half controlling possession and territory deep in to the Cobh half but couldn’t find a breakthrough until 5 minutes before half time when Cobh failed to deal with a corner. Andrew O’Brien set up Barry McCarthy to unleash an unstoppable shot to make it 1-0 at the break. The feature of the first half was Cunningham and Murphy in midfield running the show with Curran and O’Donovan also doing extremely well at full back.

The game opened up in the second half as Roco upped the gears to suffocate the Cobh team into submission.  It took only 5 minutes to double their lead when a neat header by Harding was finished sublimely by Adrien Thibaut into the corner. Roco were now tearing Cobh apart with Jay Clarke dominating on the wing and Jack Cunningham driving them on from midfield.

The goal of the game arrived on 45 minutes with Thibaut, Harding and O’Flaherty combining in a tight space before O’Flaherty curled neatly into the far corner. O’ Flaherty would go on to hit Roco’s fourth on 53 minutes after excellent work by Jay Clarke. Excellent performances by Matthew Murphy, Conor O’Donovan, Jay Clarke and Cian O’Flaherty but man of the match goes to Jack Cunningham.

08-03-17 – Last 32 – Rochestown 1 Carrigaline 0

Roco qualified for the Munster Cup QF by beating local rivals Carrigaline 1-0 in a hard fought win. Roco dominated from start to finish but came up against an inspired Carrigaline goalkeeper who made several outstanding saves throughout the hour.

Roco started bright and were almost in for a goal after just 3 mins when Cian O’Flaherty crossed to Adrien Thibaut who headed wide with the goal at his mercy. Despite dominating, Roco played out the rest of the first half in third gear and despite always threatening and having several one on ones, the Carrigaline rearguard remained intact to keep the score at 0-0 at half time.

Roco upped the tempo in the second half aided by a new formation and Matthew Murphy, Andrew O’Brien and Cian O’Flaherty really started dominating in their areas. The introduction of Jack Cunningham gave Roco a new dimension and it was Jack who created the winner after his shot from 20 yards was somehow kept out. Adrien Thibaut was on hand to tap in the rebound to put Roco in the driving seat. Roco spent the rest of the game camped in the Carrigaline half but were very comfortable and saw out the game to win 1-0. Man of the Match: Sean Cummins

05-04-17 – Quarter Final – Rochestown 1 Tralee CBS 0

Rochestown qualified for the semi-finals of Munster with a 1-0 extra time victory over a resolute Tralee side. Roco started brightly and for the first ten mins enjoyed a lot of possession without really threatening the Tralee goal. Tralee then enjoyed a similar period for the next ten mins before the game’s first real chance came. A lovely ball from left back Adam McSweeney got Adrien Thibaut through on goal but the keeper got there first. However the keeper then spilled the ball and a certain goal look on from Thibuat after he rounded the keeper only for the keeper to pull Adrien by the jersey and prevent a goal. Amazingly the referee gave a free out to the bewilderment of the entire ground. It would remain 0-0 at half time.

Roco started strong in the second half and struck the post three times during the half through Andrew O’Brien, Jay Clarke and Matthew Murphy. Roco were now completely dominating but were inches away on several occasions from making the breakthrough. Tralee looked dangerous on the counter but our outstanding defence never looked in trouble. Despite Roco’s dominance they couldnt force a winner and the game went to extra time.

It took Roco 5 mins to finally make the breakthrough after a Matthew Murphy corner found Adrien Thibaut to powerfully head home. It was no more than Roco deserved. Roco enjoyed most of the possession for the remainder of extra time to comfortably see out a win against a well organised and resolute Tralee team. Man of the Match: Andrew O’Brien
